China is now open for business in a big way when it comes to world class fashion.

A book named Fashion China, written by Gemma A. Williams; introduces us to 41 exciting Chinese designers. Her book shows the real world of Chinese fashion. Abandoning the typical stereotypes, Fashion China shows that the far from traditional, the aesthetics are diverse, unique and experimental.

“The field of fashion in China today has now opened up as a ground of experimentation and possibility.” This quote from Hung Huang is featured in the foreword to Fashion China, and is inarguably demonstrated throughout the publication. Gemma teaches us about the world of Chinese fashion throughout the book, explaining how the beginning of the Chinese fashion movement really started in 2010, when Fan Bingbing wore a yellow and gold Laurence Xu gown to the Cannes film festival. According to Gemma, five years earlier it would not even have been possible to buy from Chinese designers, even within China itself. We will be seeing more and more Chinese designers climbing to international fame in the coming years, and here are ten of the designers you should be watching.

BABYGHOST

The brand is only four years old- designed by Josh Hupper and Qiaron Huang in their studio on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. ‘Babyghost’ has grown a cult following with their cheeky streetwear, producing items such as a logo sweatshirt with Disney script; a camo taffeta bomber with exposed quilted lining over a floor-length, tartan silk chiffon dress and sneakers; and a slouchy, black, faux astrakhan coat with skintight, over-the-knee boots. The look is both tough and feminine, mixing harsh graphics with gentle textures. This half-Chinese half- American brand is proving more popular in China than in the US.

“Who knows what Banksy really looks like? I for one hope that we never find out the truth”.

banksy-dreams_00349040

The term International Man of Mystery is perhaps best used when it comes to describe the controversial street graffiti artist Banksy. The elusive artist has announced his first UK show since 2009, and the people are buzzing about it. The Banksy vs Bristol Museum show in 2009 drew in huge crowds, and his new show- Dismaland– is proving to be even more popular.

Dismaland is an exhibition at a derelict seafront Lido in Weston-super-mare. The show has been described by Banksy as a ‘family theme park unsuitable for children’.

The exhibition, which will require a lot of audience participation; has been kept a secret from residents and council workers for a long time. In fact, only four people in the entire council knew about Bankys’ exhibition taking place. Speculation had been growing in the area when locals began noticing structures being built, however they were told that a Hollywood movie was going to be shot there.(READ MORE)

Social media can be the making or the breaking of a business. Statistics show that the average American spends 37 minutes on social media every day. It allows consumers to follow your business, see promotions, keep up to date with sales and new products and interact with the business without leaving their home or even making a phone call. It gives you an online voice in a (very) big virtual world!

However, 20% of social media uses view brand interaction on Facebook and Twitter negatively, with 18% of users holding the same view about Pinterest. You’ve lived and worked all over the world. What first brought you to Singapore, and what do you appreciate most about it?

I came to Singapore nearly 10 years ago on a modelling contract. I was living between Tokyo and Paris at the time and was sent here for a one-month stint to do a few jobs. I was instantly captivated by the energy and vibrancy of the city and was immediately drawn in.

Singapore offers a wide variety of lifestyle options that rival those of any modern city in the world. It is designed for entrepreneurs to get set up quickly without much red tape, and that has been very important to me. I’m constantly surrounded by creative and talented people who inspire me on a daily basis to do well in my businesses.

Hey you, yes – we are talking to you!

At some point in our lives, every one of us will find ourselves in a pit of uncertainty and doubt. For some of us, this will only happen at one point in our lives. For others, we will approach this mind set many times throughout the years. It can be a difficult and devastating downward spiral, resulting in depression within yourself, trouble in your relationships and stagnancy within your career.

Relationships and personal life aside, we are going to focus on the career aspect of living with self-doubt. You need to believe in yourself in order to do well and advance in your career. This may come across harsh, but self-pity will get you no-where. As Winston Churchill said, ‘If you’re going through hell, keep going’.

Everyone goes through bad times, it’s just that some people know how to handle the bad times better than others. It could be anything number of things that has triggered this feeling of uncertainty within you- not getting that promotion, not hitting your sales target, missing an opportunity to better yourself in your career. It can seem like it is the end of the world, but trust me, it isn’t. When you realize this, and you learn how to deal with failures and think positively, you will become a better and stronger business person. So how do you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start believing in yourself? (READ MORE)

THE TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT: AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO LIVING SMALL

You may not have noticed, but a movement has begun to take place in America- the tiny house movement. This movement is exactly what it sounds like. People have begun to forgo large, sprawling houses in favor of something new and different, a tiny house which is beautifully built and has everything you need to live comfortably.

This movement has gained a lot of traction in the last few years. There are many reasons that people are choosing to live this way, and the main reasons are for financial and environmental concerns. Most Americans spend one third to one half of their income simply on the roof over their head and the money it costs to keep these homes running. They devote over fifteen working years to paying off their mortgages, and over 76% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. So, they get a job so that they can earn money to enjoy and use to experience life, but they spend their lifetimes paying this out so that they can have a house to live in. With almost 7-% of Americans trapped in a cycle of debt, the option to live smaller is one that could help so, so many…(READ MORE)

Women Empowerment Took Center Stage at WTA Finals “Ladies Day” – CONNECT Networking Series Were There!

For those of us in Singapore over the last week, it was made very clear that there was a buzz about town. That excitement was due to the Top 8 women tennis stars (singles & doubles) gracing the center court of the Singapore Indoor Stadium for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore 2015 presented by SC Global.

IMG_4282-1024x768

The stage was set, as we witnessed some of the highest quality women’s tennis we have seen in some time. In my opinion, the girls genuinely thought that due to the absence of current world number 1 Serena Williams – they had a shot of winning. This clearly raised the bar as we saw some insanely good action on the court. Congrats of course to the 26 year old Agnieszka “Aga” Radwańska from Poland, who took out the honors winning this year’s finals.

The action off the court was equally in full force at the Racquet Club – the event’s VIP corporate hospitality marquee. Celebrities, CEO’s, socialites and of course the legends and current superstars of women’s tennis were present throughout the week to create what was arguably one of Singapore’s most premium sports hospitality offering.

On Wednesday 28th October, the event launched its inaugural Ladies Day at the Tennis. A day dedicated to celebrating the success of women both on the world stage and in their respective communities. The event brought together over 100 women from all walks of life who were dressed to the nines, following the dress code oftennis chic…(READ MORE)
